# Peatlands — Water level is not enough; temperature changes what drainage means for carbon

- Description: Across hundreds of site-years, peatland CO₂ emissions responded nonlinearly to water-table depth, with warming amplifying emissions when peat stayed deeply drained.

## WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

Using 276 site-years of annual CO₂ flux observations across temperate and boreal peatlands, researchers found a nonlinear relationship between water-table depth and emissions. Emissions declined as water tables were raised above roughly 60–75 cm depth, while the lowest-emission conditions generally required water tables near 20 cm or higher. Deep water tables also interacted with warmer temperatures to increase emissions.

## WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

A single restoration metric can be misleading when ecological processes depend on interactions. Water level matters, but its carbon consequence changes with temperature; restoration targets therefore need to reflect hydrology–climate interactions rather than treating water-table depth as an isolated proxy.

## CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

This is a cross-site synthesis using explainable machine learning and flux observations. The reported thresholds are broad management signals, not universal prescriptions for every peatland, and the analysis focuses primarily on CO₂ rather than the full greenhouse-gas balance.
