Saline lakes and surrounding terrestrial food webs

## WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

Researchers evaluated biodiversity and ecosystem services across 85 saline lakes worldwide and recorded 200 threatened or near-threatened species. Birds accounted for 53% of the threatened species documented, reflecting the importance of saline lakes as feeding, nesting and stopover habitat. The study also found culturally and economically important services that are often difficult to quantify.

## WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

A system can look species-poor under a narrow aquatic inventory while supporting conservation value through terrestrial linkages, migratory use and ecosystem services. Local richness alone is therefore a weak proxy for what would be lost if these lakes decline.

## CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

The study synthesizes heterogeneous lakes and combines ecological evidence with expert assessment of ecosystem services. It should not be read as one universal valuation formula for every saline lake.
