Geography

Hamericho Mountain Forest, Ethiopia

System

Montane forest, shrubland and grassland

## WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

A 28-day survey recorded 32 butterfly species and 2,037 individuals. Forest had the highest richness and diversity, but all three vegetation zones supported distinct assemblages and grassland contributed unique species.

## WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

The useful result is as much methodological as biological: baseline inventories are valuable, but habitat conclusions can be overstated when vegetation zone and elevation are inseparable.

## CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

Species accumulation curves did not reach asymptotes, sampling covered one seasonal window, and site and elevation were completely confounded. Treat this as a baseline rather than a causal test of vegetation effects.
