## WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

The study modeled 265 common bird species and 144 butterfly species using observations from more than 20,000 sites across 27 European countries and land-use/climate scenarios through 2050\. None of the evaluated conservation scenarios halted or reversed average declines; farmland birds remained especially vulnerable, while butterflies were strongly affected by climate and grassland pressures.

## WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

Protected-area and land-management policy can reduce pressures without being sufficient to reverse common-biodiversity decline when production demand, intensification and climate pressures remain embedded in the wider landscape.

## CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

These are scenario projections, not observations of the future. Outcomes depend on modeled relationships and scenario assumptions, and benefits were spatially uneven, with relatively stronger gains in western and northern Europe.
