## WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

Across today’s evidence set, formerly common species can decline while richness remains stable; forests can gain productivity while resilience falls; grazed savanna can regain structure without diversity; rural landscapes can gain local bird richness while open-land specialists stagnate; and reflective urban materials can lower air temperature while worsening pedestrian heat exposure.

## WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

For Wild Lands, the useful research question is whether stewardship and project diagnostics should explicitly pair a state metric with a process or persistence metric: cover plus continuity, productivity plus resilience, vegetation structure plus composition, cooling plus thermal exposure, restoration acreage plus implementation durability.

## CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

This is an editorial synthesis across heterogeneous studies, not a tested universal framework. Any operational metric would need to be selected by system, decision and data availability rather than imposed as one standardized index.
