## WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

New South Wales' Natural Resources Commission analyzed historical greater-glider datasets spanning 1997–2024 and reported substantial declines in occupancy and abundance. Increasing temperature and severe or frequent fire were identified as the strongest broad drivers, while historical timber harvesting had a smaller modeled contribution; the commission also launched new monitoring to improve future inference.

## WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

Long-lived monitoring archives can recover signals that no single contemporary survey can see, but they also show why future management needs standardized observations designed for trend detection from the outset.

## CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

The historical datasets were not originally collected as one uniform monitoring program, which limits causal attribution and the ability to isolate forestry effects. The analysis is a government synthesis and should be interpreted alongside the new prospective monitoring program.
