## WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

A 20-year experiment compared six cropping systems under standard and reduced-input management. Soil organic matter, aggregate stability and nematode community indicators differed strongly among cropping systems, with permanent grassland performing well on several soil-health measures. Continuous maize could support high nematode abundance while showing lower maturity or richness, and input level was generally less explanatory than cropping-system identity. Standard-input treatments produced higher mean yields, while reduced-input treatments showed smaller year-to-year fluctuations in some comparisons.

## WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

The counter-signal is against managing soil health as a single input-reduction dial. Rotation, perennial cover and the ecological structure of the production system can matter more than whether the same system is simply run with fewer inputs.

## CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

The experiment does not show that fertilizer, pesticide or tillage reductions are unimportant, nor that permanent grassland can substitute for crop production. Soil indicators, yields and management objectives can trade off, and results reflect the soils and climate of one long-term Italian experiment.
