## WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

The Wildlife Trusts’ new ‘Unlocking nature for all’ paper uses national access data mapped to parliamentary constituencies and reports that 238 constituencies—44% of England’s total—have at least 20% of local properties more than a 15-minute walk from green or blue space. The organization is using the analysis to argue for treating nature as infrastructure in planning, land acquisition and maintenance.

## WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

The ecological-design relevance is that access and ecological quality are separate but intersecting network problems. Cities can add acreage without creating usable, connected, shaded or biodiverse landscapes. The stronger planning question is where green-blue infrastructure can simultaneously close human-access gaps and improve ecological function rather than treating either metric alone as success.

## CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

This is an access and policy analysis, not a biodiversity-performance study. A 15-minute proximity metric does not measure habitat quality, connectivity, safety, canopy condition or actual use, and the policy recommendations are those of an advocacy organization.
