- Description: Models for 22 rare–widespread congeneric pairs project greater average losses for rare plants, but also expansion for 41% of rare taxa and contraction for 36% of widespread taxa.

System

Rare and widespread plant distributions under climate change

## WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

A Diversity and Distributions study modeled 22 pairs of rare plant species and widespread congeners under 2041–2060 climate scenarios. Rare species were projected to lose more suitable habitat on average, but pair-level responses were heterogeneous: 41% of rare taxa gained projected suitable area while 36% of widespread taxa contracted. The authors propose conservation categories based on both net change and retention of currently suitable habitat.

## WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

The useful correction is to stop using ‘rare now’ and ‘common now’ as complete future-risk categories. Forward planning needs species-specific exposure plus dispersal, reproduction and genetics. Some widespread species may need earlier monitoring than their current abundance would suggest.

## CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

These are species-distribution-model projections of climatic suitability, not forecasts of realized abundance. Future persistence also depends on dispersal, biotic interactions, land-use change, demography and model assumptions.
