- Description: A three-year Chihuahuan Desert study suggests that dryland state change redistributes regenerative resources under shrubs, creating both a restoration barrier and a potential target for intervention.

Geography

Jornada Experimental Range / Jornada Basin LTER, northern Chihuahuan Desert, New Mexico, USA

System

Semi-arid desert grassland transitioning to shrubland

## WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

Across 20 five-hectare plots and 672 seed-bank samples collected over three years, seed density and soil resources became increasingly depleted in interspaces while remaining concentrated under shrubs along a grassland-to-shrubland degradation gradient. Perennial grass seeds were far less abundant than annual forb seeds but showed the same under-shrub concentration pattern; interspaces also lost nitrogen and became more alkaline at high degradation.

## WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

For managers, the important point is spatial: once shrub encroachment reorganizes seeds and nutrients, simply removing woody cover may not recreate the regenerative template of grassland. Mapping or sampling shrub versus interspace resource pools could help decide where active shrub removal, seed redistribution, soil amendments or other follow-up treatments deserve testing.

## CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

This was an observational degradation gradient plus greenhouse seed-bank emergence work, not a field experiment testing seed or nutrient redistribution. The proposed intervention is a management inference, and results come from one ecological site in the northern Chihuahuan Desert; local soils, shrub species, rainfall regime and state-and-transition dynamics need recalibration elsewhere.
