## WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

Restoration began in 2021 with disturbance exclusion and native planting. Twenty camera-trap stations operating from November 2024 to October 2025 documented a giant anteater in a passively restored area—the first confirmed local record in roughly four decades. A September 17 follow-up reports that monitoring continues and outside experts still consider both recolonization and displacement from degraded habitat plausible.

## WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

Keep it in the back of your mind because the observation may be an early sign that reducing livestock, dogs, hunting and other pressure can reopen movement through a productive landscape. The scientifically useful next step is repeated detections, demographic evidence and landscape-scale source information—not a victory narrative.

## CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

One animal cannot establish causation, population recovery or even origin. The individual could be dispersing from elsewhere as surrounding habitat changes, and long-term connectivity and reproduction remain unproven.
