Geography

Arctic Alaska, USA

System

Arctic Ocean, sea ice and subsistence marine systems

## WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

Working with the Alaska Arctic Observatory and Knowledge Hub, researchers used seasonal calendars to compare Iñupiat narrated observations with an Arctic Ocean hindcast. The model generally captured seasonal timing but predicted 2019 freeze-up too early; observers documented late freeze-up, storminess and unusually difficult hunting conditions that were not adequately represented by conventional evaluation alone.

## WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

Co-production can improve models not by converting Indigenous Knowledge into another validation dataset, but by changing what scientists ask the model to represent and which errors matter for decisions. The paper also foregrounds data sovereignty and Indigenous authority in the research process.

## CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

This is a perspective and methods demonstration from an ongoing Alaska collaboration, not a broad benchmark proving that every co-produced model is more accurate. Some model-development steps and decision outcomes remain prospective.
