# Drought can pre-thin a dry forest before fire imposes a second ecological filter

- Description: Twenty years of permanent plots in the Chisos Mountains show severe drought mortality followed by high-severity fire can compound into much larger structural change than either disturbance alone suggests.

Evidence

Peer-reviewed

Geography

Chisos Mountains, Big Bend National Park, Texas, USA

System

Dry montane woodland and forest

## WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

Long-term plots documented substantial tree-density and basal-area losses during drought before wildfire, followed by further losses in high-severity burns. Species responses were uneven, with piñon, juniper and oak showing especially large cumulative declines and juvenile abundance also reduced.

## WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

Disturbance sequence matters. A forest already filtered by drought may enter a fire with altered fuels, survivors and regeneration potential, so post-fire trajectories cannot be understood from burn severity alone.

## CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

The evidence is observational and comes from one mountain range and one disturbance sequence. Severity classes describe realized fire effects rather than a randomized treatment, and longer monitoring is needed to distinguish transition from delayed recovery.
