- Description: At two Southeast Alaska commercial farms, eDNA and dive surveys found strong regional ecological variation but little evidence that the farms supported distinct fish or macroinvertebrate assemblages.

Evidence

Peer-reviewed

Geography

Southeast Alaska, USA

System

Nearshore kelp aquaculture

## WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

Researchers followed two commercial kelp farms and paired control sites for a year using fish eDNA, SCUBA macroinvertebrate surveys and abiotic measurements. Community composition varied strongly among locations, while farm-versus-control treatment effects were small and the farms did not support clearly unique assemblages.

## WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

Aquaculture structures should not be assumed to create biodiversity benefit simply because they add three-dimensional habitat. The null-ish result is useful because it separates plausible mechanism from demonstrated ecological effect.

## CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

This was a one-year study of two relatively small farms near Juneau. Power was limited for some comparisons and the result should not be generalized to larger farms, other coastlines, older installations or other ecosystem functions.
