Evidence

Peer-reviewed

Geography

Methodological; demonstrated with Pacific salmon, squid and jumbo squid cases

System

Semelparous marine fisheries

## WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

The authors developed an age- and cohort-structured approach that explicitly removes mature post-spawning animals, then compared it with conventional assessment behavior in simulations and a jumbo squid case. Models that retained post-reproductive animals could overestimate older biomass and spawning-stock biomass even while fitting observed data well.

## WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

Life history is not a bookkeeping detail. For semelparous species, an assessment can fit the data and still misrepresent what biomass actually remains available after reproduction, with direct implications for harvest advice.

## CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

Most performance evidence comes from simulation plus one empirical case, and results depend on assumptions about maturity and natural mortality. The study does not show that all current assessments of semelparous stocks are biased.
