- Description: Six to ten years after Chesapeake Bay restoration, stone-plus-spat reefs retained more complex structure and larger nekton than several alternatives, while harvested reefs sometimes held more small fish—evidence that restoration method changes function, not just oyster acreage.

Geography

Harris Creek, Chesapeake Bay, Maryland, USA

System

Restored oyster reefs and estuarine nekton communities

## WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

An Ecosphere study evaluated Harris Creek oyster reefs roughly six to ten years after large-scale restoration using video at 484 reef sites, sonar at 29 sites and acoustic fish observations. Stone plus spat-on-shell reefs had the highest structural habitat scores, while spat-on-shell-only reefs were less consistently complex. Restored reefs tended to support larger nekton, yet harvested reefs showed higher overall catch rates and more small or schooling fish, demonstrating that different reef states can favor different components of the community.

## WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

Restoration success depends on the ecological function being sought. A reef built for long-lived three-dimensional structure, oyster production, refuge for larger fish or total fish activity may not rank the same across all metrics. Method choice therefore belongs in the ecological objective rather than being treated as an interchangeable construction detail.

## CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

The study is from one large restoration project and lacks a full randomized before-after design. Acoustic observations represent a limited sampling window, schooling behavior can affect counts, and higher fish abundance around structure does not by itself distinguish attraction from new production.
