Evidence

Peer-reviewed

Geography

Upper Juruá and western Amazonia, including Brazil, Ecuador and Peru

System

Seasonally flooded várzea forest and amphibian breeding habitat

## WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

Researchers described Adenomera varcena using morphology, coloration, advertisement calls and mitochondrial and nuclear DNA. The species is associated with seasonally flooded várzea habitats in western Amazonia, an ecological setting unusual among the forest-dwelling members of the genus.

## WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

Taxonomy can reveal habitat specialization that changes the conservation unit. A lineage tied to seasonal floodplain dynamics may face different hydrologic and land-use pressures than congeners treated under a broader forest-habitat label.

## CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

This is a new-species description, so abundance, demographic trend, full distribution and tolerance to hydrologic change remain poorly known. The habitat association is important, but climate- or flood-regime vulnerability has not yet been directly demonstrated.
