Lowland peatland, meres and beaver-modified wetland hydrology

## WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

Researchers followed hydrology for four years after a pair of Eurasian beavers was released into a 4.5-hectare enclosure. Relative to comparison meres, surface-water and groundwater levels increased substantially within the enclosure, and during the 2022 drought the beaver-modified site showed delayed declines, shorter periods without surface water and less groundwater drawdown.

## WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

For managers whose objective is to raise and stabilize peatland water tables, beaver activity may function as a hydrologic restoration tool rather than simply a wildlife intervention. The practical decision is where beaver dams, leaky structures or other measures fit the site’s water-level target, infrastructure constraints and sensitive ecological features.

## CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

This is one enclosed project with a small monitoring network, and the drought response could not support every formal statistical comparison. Free-living beavers may behave differently, downstream water bodies were not fully insulated from drought, and beaver engineering can conflict with site-specific conservation features or available woody resources. It is not a universal replacement for engineered water-control measures.
