Evidence

Institutional project update

Geography

Porcupine Bank, Ireland, and Guilvinec Canyon, Bay of Biscay, France

System

Deep-sea cold-water coral reefs

## WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

An international restoration project reports deploying 23 large artificial reef modules at deep-sea sites off Ireland and France, some equipped with shell or ceramic settlement surfaces and some carrying living coral fragments. Earlier test material remained alive and had begun attracting colonists, while the new deployments are intended to create a controlled platform for longer-term recovery experiments.

## WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

Worth keeping in the back of your mind because deep-sea restoration is moving from feasibility discussion to installed experimental infrastructure. The important evidence will come later: coral survival, recruitment, food-web use, structural persistence and comparison with protected reference sites.

## CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

This is a project-team update, not a peer-reviewed demonstration of restored reef function. Early fragment survival or colonization is not equivalent to ecosystem recovery, and long-term performance, material impacts and life-cycle tradeoffs remain unresolved.
