Evidence

Peer-reviewed review

Geography

Global fisheries monitoring, with NOAA and international survey examples

System

Fisheries-independent monitoring and marine survey infrastructure

## WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

A peer-reviewed review examines how eDNA, imaging, autonomous platforms and acoustic systems can augment fisheries-independent surveys. The authors emphasize overlapping old and new methods, explicit calibration and uncertainty propagation so technological change does not create an artificial ecological break in a long-term monitoring series.

## WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

Monitoring programs are infrastructure. A new sensor can be better in many ways and still damage the evidence base if it is introduced without enough overlap to separate real ecological change from method change.

## CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

This is a methodological roadmap and review, not a field trial showing one replacement technology improves all surveys. Performance and cost depend on species, habitat, sensor, vessel constraints and survey objectives, so modernization needs system-specific validation.
