## WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

A Frontiers study used high-throughput quantitative PCR (HT-qPCR) to quantify carbon-, nitrogen-, phosphorus- and sulfur-cycling functional genes across limestone, dolostone and clastic-rock forest soils. Limestone soils showed significantly higher abundances across several functional-gene groups, and random-forest models explained 87–92% of variation in the measured functional-gene pools, informing the authors’ proposed nitrogen–microbial limitation–reactive minerals framework.

## WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

Underlying geology can constrain biological function even under broadly similar forest cover. For soil assessment and restoration, lithology may be a useful prior variable when interpreting microbial indicators or transferring expectations from one site to another.

## CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

Functional genes indicate metabolic potential, not realized nutrient flux. The lithology comparisons are observational and can carry correlated soil and site differences, and the proposed predictive framework still needs broader validation beyond the sampled forests.
