System

Arid-basin groundwater, irrigated oases and desert vegetation

## WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

A 2003–2024 analysis combined GRACE, GLDAS and MODIS data to compare groundwater-storage anomalies with vegetation condition across the Tarim Basin. Basin-scale groundwater storage declined while vegetation condition generally improved, and the relationship between greening and groundwater varied strongly by location rather than following one basin-wide rule.

## WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

Greenness is not groundwater security. In heavily managed arid basins, vegetation improvement can coexist with declining subsurface storage, so ecological and agricultural condition metrics need to be read alongside the water account that sustains them.

## CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

GRACE has coarse spatial resolution and cannot cleanly separate shallow and deep groundwater or every storage component. The analysis is observational, and irrigation, glacier/snow inputs, soil moisture and land-use change can confound spatial relationships.
