- Description: Across 50 fires, treatment effects were strong in the drier eastern study landscape but not statistically distinct in the more productive western Klamath landscape.

Geography

Southern Oregon and northern California, USA

System

Fire-prone conifer forests

## WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

Across 50 wildfires from 2012–2021, treated areas in the eastern landscape had significantly lower modeled high-severity probability than untreated areas; treatments less than nine years old and thinning followed by prescribed fire performed especially well. In the western landscape, large fire-spread days dominated severity and treatment types were not significantly different from untreated areas.

## WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

The result is a useful brake on universal treatment claims: treatment effectiveness is conditional on landscape setting, weather and treatment age.

## CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

This is an observational landscape analysis of federal treatment records and fires in two ecoregional settings. It estimates severity outcomes, not every ecological objective of fuel treatment, and cannot guarantee the same response elsewhere.
