## WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

An integrated climate–rangeland–society model reproduced historical livestock mortality, hay production and herd size reasonably well, then projected intensifying dzud risk into the 2030s under baseline pathways. In the modeled export-enhanced pathways, herd pressure falls and annual livestock mortality is reduced from roughly 8–11 million sheep units to about 1–3 million.

## WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

The important mechanism is coupled vulnerability: summer drought, winter exposure, forage reserves, stocking pressure, markets and governance interact. Adaptation therefore cannot be reduced to better weather forecasting or emergency hay alone; the herd and market system changes the ecological risk.

## CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

This is a national scenario model, not a field trial of export policy. Household heterogeneity, market access, infrastructure, prices and distributional effects remain consequential, and the modeled pathway should not be read as a universal prescription for pastoral systems.
