Southern Ocean observing system

## WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

CSIRO and international partners have begun a five-year program deploying wind- and solar-powered uncrewed surface vehicles quarterly around Antarctica. The fleet is designed to collect continuous ocean and atmospheric CO2, temperature, salinity, oxygen and meteorological measurements, including winter coverage.

## WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

This is worth watching because a persistent observation gap is becoming an instrumented network. If coverage and calibration hold, it could change how confidently Southern Ocean carbon variability is estimated and how annual carbon budgets are constrained.

## CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

This is an observing-program launch, not an ecological finding. Coverage, sensor performance, weather losses, calibration and eventual integration into carbon estimates still have to be demonstrated.
