- Description: Cornell and USDA’s NVSL confirmed virulent Newcastle disease virus in one double-crested cormorant; the finding matters for wildlife–poultry surveillance, not as evidence of broader transmission.

Evidence

Institutional / NGO report

Geography

New York, USA

System

Wildlife disease / One Health

## WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

Cornell’s Animal Health Diagnostic Center reported a virulent Newcastle disease virus detection in an adult double-crested cormorant, with USDA’s National Veterinary Services Laboratories confirming the virulent genotype using the fusion-protein cleavage-site sequence.

## WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

The detection is worth retaining as a One Health surveillance signal because wild birds can move pathogens across landscapes that also contain domestic poultry and rehabilitation or captive-bird facilities.

## CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

This is a single confirmed bird. It does not establish sustained transmission among wild birds, a poultry outbreak, or a population-level wildlife effect; the source is an institutional diagnostic report rather than peer-reviewed epidemiology.
