Evidence

Peer-reviewed

Geography

Experimental soils spanning four widespread permafrost types

System

Permafrost soils

## WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

In 389-day incubations across four permafrost types, adding multifunctional active-layer microbial inocula increased carbon dioxide production by roughly 20–60% across all soils and triggered nitrous oxide production in two. Functional limitations and community coalescence differed among soils.

## WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

Permafrost response depends not only on what substrates thaw exposes but also on which microbial functions can arrive and establish. Dispersal and community assembly may therefore change greenhouse-gas trajectories after thaw.

## CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

The experiment used laboratory incubations and deliberate inoculation, not natural field dispersal. The magnitude and persistence of these effects under real thaw, hydrology and plant interactions remain uncertain.
