Geography

Lower Amu Darya River, Uzbekistan / Aral Sea basin

System

Tugai floodplain and riparian forests

## WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

An analysis of 312 geobotanical descriptions across four Lower Amu Darya valley segments found the strongest vegetation transformation in the delta, where salinization is intensifying and halophytic shrubs, herbs and ruderal annuals are replacing poplar communities. The upper segment, lacking hydraulic structures, retained more natural floodplain conditions and lower transformation; regulated middle reaches were intermediate.

## WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

Riparian forest condition cannot be read separately from river regime and salinity. For tugai systems, conserving tree cover without preserving the hydrologic processes that sustain floodplain vegetation risks protecting the appearance of a forest while losing the conditions that regenerate it.

## CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

This is an observational spatial comparison, not a controlled hydrologic experiment. Regulation, salinity, climate aridification and land-use history covary, so differences among river segments do not isolate a single causal driver; projected negative trends are forecasts rather than measured future outcomes.
