Evidence

Peer-reviewed

Geography

Merse River, Italy; Danube River, Slovakia

System

Riparian river and beaver-engineered wetland habitats

## WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

Standardized nocturnal surveys recorded 623 fireflies across beaver and control sites in two river systems. Beaver occurrence was the consistent significant predictor of higher observed firefly counts in the fitted models, with the signal driven mostly by males.

## WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

The result makes ecosystem engineering a useful hypothesis for invertebrate habitat, not just vertebrate or hydrologic outcomes. Beaver-created moisture and structural heterogeneity may affect taxa that conventional beaver monitoring rarely measures.

## CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

This is an observational, small-spatial-scale comparison rather than a randomized beaver experiment. Counts were strongly male-biased, females and larvae were sparsely detected, and river/species context complicates causal attribution; higher counts do not establish population growth.
