- Description: In a low-disturbance Australian mangrove–saltmarsh, crab burrows, pneumatophores and vegetation contributed to nitrogen pathways that destructive sampling can underrepresent.

Evidence

Peer-reviewed

Geography

Woogoompah Island, southern Moreton Bay, Queensland, Australia

System

Mangrove–saltmarsh tidal wetland

## WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

A new in-situ intact-chamber method preserved crab burrows, mangrove pneumatophores, saltmarsh vegetation and bare sediment while measuring nitrogen transformations. Whole-system denitrification was estimated at 17.1 kg N ha−1 yr−1 versus 2.5 kg N ha−1 yr−1 recycled through DNRA; no anammox was detected. Rates were lower than many more nutrient-enriched mangrove–saltmarsh systems.

## WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

The measurement unit changes the ecological story. If monitoring removes the structures where exchange and microbial processing occur, it can systematically misrepresent how a wetland handles nutrients; intact-structure methods can therefore improve process-based restoration and water-quality assessment.

## CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

This is a method demonstration in one low-disturbance wetland, not a replicated comparison of restoration strategies. Annualized rates depend on spatial and seasonal extrapolation, and low nutrient availability at this site limits transferability to more disturbed or nutrient-rich coasts.
