- Description: The first confirmed Sri Lankan record of Godiva rachelae extends a documented Indo-West Pacific distribution—but one photographed animal is a biodiversity signal, not a population trend.

Geography

Thalawila Reef, northwestern Sri Lanka

System

Shallow coral reef

## WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

A 2023 underwater survey photographed one adult Godiva rachelae at about 5 m depth on Thalawila Reef; the 2026 paper identifies it from external morphology and reports the first confirmed Sri Lankan record of the species. The locality helps fill a documented gap between western Indian Ocean and Andaman/Australian records.

## WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

Sparse occurrence records can materially change biogeographic maps in under-surveyed systems. The signal is as much about sampling effort as range: better taxonomic coverage can reveal continuity that looked like absence.

## CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

This is one specimen identified photographically with no voucher or genetic confirmation. It does not demonstrate recent colonization, abundance, range expansion or population persistence; the authors explicitly recommend voucher and molecular confirmation in future surveys.
