## WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

The paper extends heightened evolutionary distinctiveness and HEDGE-style measures beyond phylogenetic trees to phylogenetic networks, discrete feature diversity and more general biodiversity measures. It also derives explicit expressions for the mean and variance of these extinction-risk-weighted measures and illustrates them with the 27 living crocodilian species.

## WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

This is worth keeping in the back of the mind because conservation prioritization increasingly compresses evolutionary history, extinction probability and uncertainty into indices. Better-behaved mathematics could make those summaries more transparent—but the important downstream question will be how sensitive real decisions are to the chosen risk model.

## CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

This is primarily theoretical/methodological work, currently an accepted manuscript, not evidence that one prioritization index improves conservation outcomes in practice. Its operational value depends on extinction-probability inputs, phylogenetic or feature data and how decision-makers use the resulting metric.
