- Description: Wave-buoy observations and two decades of satellite records show locally generated waves in Vincennes Bay can fracture sea ice outward from a coastal polynya, with concentration losses persisting at least a week.

Geography

Vincennes Bay, East Antarctica

System

Coastal polynya and sea ice

## WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

Wave-buoy observations combined with 2003–2022 satellite records show that waves generated within a coastal polynya can propagate outward and fracture surrounding sea ice from the inside. Extreme wave events coincided with lower sea-ice concentration that persisted for at least a week and with more transitions toward frazil-ice conditions.

## WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

Polynyas are not only openings produced by large-scale forcing; once open, their own wave field can help reorganize the surrounding ice. That feedback matters for interpreting local ice stability, ocean–atmosphere exchange and habitat conditions.

## CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

The direct wave observations are rare and come from one polynya. Event coincidence and process evidence do not establish a universal Antarctic response, and projecting the mechanism under future climate conditions requires additional observations.
