# Ghana’s first fire-site PFOA/PFOS baseline found hotspots—but not a single source story

- Description: Across fire-affected soils and nearby waters, a few sites crossed screening thresholds under EPA-based assumptions, while the study explicitly could not attribute contamination uniquely to firefighting foam.

## WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

Researchers sampled soils at 18 fire-affected sites, surface water at seven sites and one shallow well, measuring PFOA and PFOS. A deterministic screening analysis produced hazard indices above one at one surface-water location and the well, identifying sites that warrant closer investigation rather than establishing a regional contamination pattern.

## WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

A baseline is useful when it stays a baseline. The decision signal is where additional source tracing and exposure work are justified—not that all fire sites share one contamination pathway or public-health consequence.

## CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

Only two legacy PFAS compounds were measured, the water sample is small, and the cross-sectional design cannot attribute contamination uniquely to aqueous film-forming foam or establish disease risk. Screening ratios are not equivalent to regulatory findings or clinical exposure assessment.
