Protected forest and cultural landscape

## WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

A qualitative case study of Wuyishan National Park describes co-management as a linked system of institutions, compensation, ranger roles, tea-related cultural knowledge and ecological monitoring. Rather than treating local participation as one input, the study follows how social rules and ecological observations feed back into management decisions.

## WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

For protected-area governance, participation is more useful as an operating system than a checkbox. The case suggests ecological monitoring, livelihood rules and place-based knowledge have to remain connected if co-management is expected to adapt rather than simply comply.

## CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

This is a single qualitative case based on interviews, documents and field observation. It does not statistically isolate which governance component caused ecological outcomes, and institutional arrangements may not transfer directly to other parks.
