Evidence

Peer-reviewed

Geography

Five low-order streams, Hungary

System

Beaver ponds and headwater streams

## WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

Researchers deployed standardized cotton strips in aquatic and shoreline habitats upstream of and within Eurasian beaver ponds at five streams. Tensile-strength loss was faster in upstream reference reaches and in aquatic placements than in beaver ponds or shoreline placements. Turbidity, pH, dissolved oxygen and oxygen saturation differed, but most chemical variables did not; multivariate results pointed to several interacting gradients rather than one controlling variable.

## WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

Beaver engineering can alter carbon-processing conditions without every water-quality metric moving in the same direction. The study adds a process-level response to the more familiar habitat and hydrology story.

## CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

Five streams are a small regional sample, cotton strips are a standardized cellulose proxy rather than whole-ecosystem carbon flux, and the study does not establish whether slower decomposition means greater long-term carbon storage.
