- Description: A new synthesis finds that expanding urban form can modify atmospheric dynamics and intensify short-duration rainfall, making urbanization part of the hazard as well as part of the exposure.

## WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

A Nature Cities review synthesizes observations, theory and modeling on the urban-rainfall effect. It concludes that cities can alter atmospheric dynamics in ways that intensify short-duration extreme rainfall, with the magnitude and spatial pattern varying by city form, climate, storm type and scale. The authors frame urban growth and rainfall extremes as a coupled, co-evolving system rather than treating rainfall as an external forcing on static infrastructure.

## WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

For planners and landscape designers, the implication is that stormwater capacity and green-blue infrastructure may be responding to a hazard partly modified by the urban fabric itself. Future risk assessment should test local rainfall feedbacks rather than simply applying regional precipitation change to a fixed city.

## CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

This is a synthesis of a heterogeneous literature, not evidence that every city intensifies every storm. Effects are spatially variable and scale-dependent, and local attribution remains difficult; planning applications require city-specific observations and models.
