Geography

Dongtan Nature Reserve, Yangtze Estuary, Shanghai, China

System

Coastal saltmarsh / managed wetland

## WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

Using 225 Sentinel-1A images from 2018–2023 and 92 Sentinel-2A images from 2017–2023, researchers tracked post-eradication recovery after Spartina alterniflora removal. Water distribution became more seasonally stable, mowed areas showed about 20% faster vegetation growth than uncut areas, and spatial analysis classified roughly 90% of the reserve as showing synergistic rather than trade-off relationships between water-level regulation and vegetation management.

## WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

Post-eradication restoration is not a single action. The case shows how hydrology and vegetation treatment can be coordinated seasonally around native-plant recovery and migratory-bird habitat rather than evaluated independently.

## CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

This is a remote-sensing case study of an intensively managed reserve, not a randomized experiment. The synergy classification depends on the study’s spatial metrics, management evolved through time, and Dongtan’s hydrology and flyway role limit direct transfer of the exact schedule elsewhere.
