- Description: A new review argues that shallow aquifers host diverse microbial food webs and biogeochemical processes while viruses, protists, fungi and in-situ process rates remain poorly characterized.

## WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

A peer-reviewed review synthesizes evidence that shallow groundwater is a vast freshwater habitat containing diverse microbial communities that mediate carbon, nitrogen and contaminant transformations. It emphasizes persistent blind spots in process-rate measurements and in the ecology of viruses, protists and fungi, along with the difficulty of sampling organisms and interactions in a physically inaccessible environment.

## WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

The weak signal is methodological: groundwater protection is usually organized around chemistry and supply, while ecological process monitoring is much less mature. If the field develops comparable biological baselines, aquifer management may eventually gain an ecosystem-function layer analogous to surface waters.

## CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

This is a review article, not a new field experiment, and it deliberately emphasizes knowledge gaps. The strength and composition of microbial processes vary among aquifers, and it is premature to translate the synthesis into universal groundwater bioindicators or management thresholds.
