Evidence

Peer-reviewed diet metabarcoding study

Geography

Restored and primary forests in China

System

Forest birds / arthropod food webs

## WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

Across 494 faecal samples from 44 bird species, researchers recovered 2,282 bird–arthropod interactions. Simulated removals of abundant birds particularly destabilized plantation networks, while loss of large birds weakened networks across forest types.

## WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

Predator guilds, not just bird richness and planted-tree count, deserve attention in forest restoration assessments.

## CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

The food-web and extinction exercise models possible functional robustness; it did not experimentally remove predators or measure insect outbreaks.
