Evidence

Peer-reviewed

Geography

Chingaza páramo, Colombia

System

High-Andean wetland soils

## WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

Researchers reconstructed 109 high-quality microbial genomes across páramo wetland ecosites, including lineages without described genus-level representatives. Carbon-fixation, sulfur and other metabolic pathways were common, while methanogenesis markers were not recovered from the high- and medium-quality genomes; a low-abundance methanogen signal remained detectable at the read level.

## WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

Microbial novelty is still a major uncertainty in high-elevation wetland carbon models. The study also shows why absence of a pathway in reconstructed genomes should be interpreted differently from absence of the process in the ecosystem.

## CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

Metagenomic reconstruction is incomplete and does not measure methane flux. Rare organisms can be missed by genome assembly, and the low-abundance read-level methanogen signal argues against treating the result as evidence that the wetland produces no methane.
