Evidence

Peer-reviewed

Geography

Brazilian Cerrado; 80 ecosystem units across 20 ecoregions

System

Tropical savanna; grassland and wetland ecosystems

## WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

Using remotely sensed changes from 1985–2020 and multiple Red List of Ecosystems criteria, researchers classified 12 Cerrado ecosystem units as Endangered and 43 as Vulnerable out of 80 assessed. Distribution loss was the main risk pathway; restricted ranges identified additional vulnerable wetlands.

## WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

Conservation maps need to see both disappearing widespread habitat and naturally small ecosystems. Combining range-loss and restricted-area criteria gives planning teams a better triage basis than forest-cover change alone.

## CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

These are criteria-based risk classifications and modeled projections, not 55 confirmed ecosystem collapses.
