- Description: Sequencing water samples from 20 sites identified 11 bloom-associated taxa; detecting their DNA is not the same as forecasting a harmful bloom.

Evidence

Peer-reviewed

Geography

Indian River Lagoon, Florida, United States; 20 sampling sites

System

Estuaries; harmful algal bloom surveillance

## WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

Researchers analyzed environmental DNA in water samples from 20 Indian River Lagoon sites using an Oxford Nanopore MinION sequencer and a eukaryotic ribosomal RNA marker. They detected 11 taxa associated with harmful algal blooms, including some at low abundance. The results show the potential of long-read sequencing to characterize these communities; they should not be read as a demonstrated operational bloom-warning system.

## WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

Species-level signals may improve the interval between field sampling and a management conversation. But biodiversity detection must be connected to toxicity measurements, environmental conditions and decisions before it becomes an early-warning system.

## CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

Detecting genetic material does not establish a toxic bloom, current toxin exposure or predictive accuracy. Portability and real-time sequencing do not by themselves establish a validated sample-to-warning turnaround time. This is a methods demonstration, not evidence of prevented health or fisheries harm.
