Evidence

Peer-reviewed

Geography

Poyang Lake floodplain, China

System

Freshwater floodplain wetlands; vegetation diversity; hydrology

## WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

A study combining satellite observations and machine-learning analyses found that extreme precipitation was associated with spatially uneven wetland vegetation patterns. Modeled effects differed between landscape and community scales, with soil, relief and water conditions mediating different responses and community-scale signals lagging larger-scale change.

## WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

A wetland intervention can look successful or unsuccessful depending on when and at what scale it is measured. Hydrologic histories should travel with plant monitoring data, especially when an extreme rainfall year precedes vegetation change.

## CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

The analysis is observational and model-dependent. These spatial associations should not be turned into universal causal lags or restoration prescriptions without local testing.
