Evidence

Commentary

Geography

Florida Keys, United States; nearshore hardbottom and coral reef habitats

System

Degraded reef structure; fish habitat; restoration alternatives

## WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

A peer-reviewed perspective argues that purpose-built habitat support structures could complement slow rebuilding of living reef architecture and help retain niches needed by fish and invertebrates through different life stages. It uses Florida Keys hardbottom and reef habitats as examples but does not present a field comparison showing additional biological production.

## WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

When reef structure disappears faster than it can be restored, interim habitat designs merit careful trials. The useful question is whether added structure improves survival or production beyond attracting animals already present—and whether it avoids ecological or maintenance costs.

## CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

This is a proposal and synthesis, not evidence that artificial habitat structures reverse ecosystem degradation. Attraction versus production, biofouling, storm stability and management tradeoffs require independent trials.
