- Description: The simple assumption that more diverse litter always decomposes faster did not hold consistently in a southern China field experiment.

Evidence

Peer-reviewed

Geography

Hailing Island, southern China; subtropical mangrove wetland

System

Mangrove litter decomposition; nitrogen enrichment; nutrient cycling

## WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

Experiments compared litter from Sonneratia apetala, Kandelia obovata and Avicennia marina alone and in mixtures. Relative to weighted expectations, only 20% of comparisons showed significant nonadditive effects on mass remaining, versus 65% for organic carbon, 70% for nitrogen and 55% for phosphorus. A three-species mixture did not consistently lose more mass than two-species combinations. Nitrogen-enrichment plots showed no monotonic dose response in mass loss.

## WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

Carbon and nutrient processes can shift without a visually obvious increase in how quickly leaves disappear. This is a reminder to monitor the particular carbon/nutrient outcome before claiming a diverse planting has accelerated decomposition or blue-carbon storage.

## CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

Nitrogen doses were each represented by one plot and analyzed descriptively; they cannot support replicated inference about fertilizer treatments. Litter bag decomposition and element concentrations do not equal whole-ecosystem carbon burial.
