- Description: Ship–glider acoustic agreement was strong, but the instruments did not clearly resolve diel migration.

Evidence

Peer-reviewed

Geography

Washington coast, United States; cross-shelf and upwelling fronts

System

Pacific Northwest ocean fronts; acoustic fish and zooplankton targets

## WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

An acoustic-equipped Slocum glider completed ten front-crossing transects over one to two weeks. During a concurrent ship comparison, acoustic observations were consistent (R²=0.87). Target layers appeared vertically partitioned and chiefly offshore of an upwelling front. The authors could not clearly resolve diel vertical migration with the available frequency differentiation.

## WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

Autonomous surveys can reveal changing spatial structure with less reliance on ship time, but calibration and organism classification remain as consequential as instrument coverage.

## CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

Acoustic categories are not complete species-level identifications. One deployment, one ship comparison and unresolved diel behavior do not establish broad monitoring equivalence.
