Evidence

Peer-reviewed

Geography

Rio Grande riparian corridor, Texas, United States; 167 surveyed sites

System

Riparian habitat; Arundo donax; birds and butterflies; invasive-plant management

## WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

A U.S. Forest Service-linked study used 2016–2017 survey data from 167 Rio Grande riparian sites to model relationships between invasive giant reed (Arundo donax) cover and occupancy of 16 bird species and butterfly groups at multiple spatial scales. Five of 16 birds showed negative associations with reed, two positive, and several had no direct association; butterfly responses did not reduce to a universal negative effect.

## WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

Set the objective as functional riparian habitat, not simply acres of reed cleared. Survey native woody and herbaceous cover, target bird guilds, erosion and follow-up regeneration before deciding where to control, what to replant and how to judge outcomes.

## CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

Occupancy associations do not establish reed as the cause of each response, and this was not a field experiment comparing control methods. It cannot prove that clearing alone will recover birds or that doing nothing is harmless.
