Evidence

Peer-reviewed

Geography

Sagebrush-steppe prescribed fire, western United States

System

Rangeland fire; acoustic and infrasound monitoring

## WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

A 2026 Geophysical Research Letters field study deployed eight infrasound arrays at distances up to 20 kilometres around a relatively mild prescribed fire. Arrays within roughly two kilometres detected coherent fire-related signals between one and ten hertz, sometimes tracking continued burning between ignition activities.

## WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

The interesting possibility is an independent physical sensor to complement satellite, camera and field reports of fire progression. Signals from low-intensity fires may eventually improve detection in conditions where ordinary visibility or thermal observations are imperfect.

## CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

This is a single controlled-burn demonstration, not a validated wildfire early-warning network. Detection range and precision are contingent on sensor layout, terrain, atmosphere and ambient noise; operational benefit remains hypothetical.
