Geography

Akanyaru catchment, Rwanda

System

Agricultural watershed erosion

## WHAT THE EVIDENCE SAYS

GIS/RUSLE modelling across 3,402 square kilometres estimated annual soil loss from near zero to 51.4 tonnes per hectare, with higher modelled losses on steep degraded and intensively farmed slopes.

## WHY IT MATTERS / OUR READ

Spatial risk surfaces can prioritize consultations and erosion-control reconnaissance rather than assign uniform prescriptions to an entire catchment.

## CAVEATS / UNCERTAINTY

RUSLE produces modeled hillslope detachment, not field-measured sediment delivered to wetlands; conservative support-practice assumptions affect estimates.
